Completed Projects 2009 - 2010

President George Spencer and his Board and Chair Members were presiding the Avenues of Service. The Northlake Rotary Club participated in the following Service Projects throughout the year 2009 - 2010
Here are just a few highlights from our 2009 - 2010 Northlake Rotary Club Assembly on June 10th, 2010.
- We have raised $2,200 by saving our change for PolioPlus, and $400 for the CART Fund.
- We had a great student in Jacek for the GRSP.
- Our fight for literacy was lead by Deborah Dyste, our Tutor of the Year.
- Our membership grew by two members.
- Our three Interact Clubs helped us have a successful Habitat Build, and an Immunization Drive that helped to keep 406 Clarkston refugee residents flu free.
- We hosted our hometown heroes, and saluted DeKalb Fire and Police. Northlake Rotarians welcomed our Military Servicemen home with a smile with the USO.
- And we increased our Rotary Foundation donations by 50%, and furnished a clinic in South Africa with medicine and furniture.
Community Service: Chairman McClellon Cox continued the AIDS Awareness program at our local high schools. We donated over $400 to Alzheimer's through contributions dropped into the blue buckets on each table as well as continued to help MedShare. We did the fall flu immunization program in Clarkston, and helped at CHRIS Homes. Our club was working on a Habitat for Humanity house in March 20th.
Vocational Service: Chairman Lee Jordan had us continue the Apples for Teachers program, the Police/Firefighter recognition, and Career Day at Lakeside High School on April 1st. Ken Carpenter helped Lee by organizing the USO greetings of returning armed services personnel on July 7th, 2009.
International Service: Chairman Paul Tom told us briefly about the matching grants we are working on, and one we might consider for the future of the rebuilding of the fire ravaged Indolvu Clinic in South Africa. Here in Clarkston we worked with the Fugee Group and the Fugee Soccer Boys s from Nigeria, Belize, El Salvador, and other countries.
New Generations: Chairman Wayne Rush kept his promise to supporting our Interact Clubs at Lakeside, Tucker ,and Clarkston High Schools.
GRSP - Our GRSP student Jacek from Poland attended Oglethorpe University, and made frequent visits to our club.
Membership: Chairman Wayne Gresham was very busy to bring in new members to the club.
Program Development: Chairman Gary Jones had a broad array of subjects covered by speakers at our meetings. We had speakers on ethics, literacy, Rotary programs as well as other interesting business oriented programs, and some classification talks.
Literacy: Literacy Volunteers of Atlanta (LVA) awarded Deborah Dyste (Northlake's Literacy Chair) and her ESOL student, Young Ju Ahn, Tutor and Student of the Year for 2009-2010. Tutoring with the Fugees (an organization of refugee boys in nearby Clarkston) continued twice weekly. The club was awarded a Rotary Foundation Major Matching Grant to help fund the Fugees Summer Scholastic Boot Camp to be held this summer on the Agnes Scott Campus. The club donated two sets of Souns (to the Fugees and to The Little Rascals Creche in South Africa) and made a donation to the Ferst Foundation. Members enthusiastically participated in Jump Into Reading at Idlewood Elementary School. The District Literacy Conference at the Carter Center, and a local one at the Spruill Library added to knowledge about literacy.
Rotary Foundation: Chairman Jim Norman thanked the club for its generosity in Foundation giving, noting that we have 100% Sustaining Members (at least $100/yr in Foundation giving), and new Paul Harris Society members (at least $1,000/yr in Foundation giving).
